The Wooster Collective
Drawing on visual traditions as varied as American street & folk art, German expressionism, Christian icons, Zen ensos, and minimalism, brothers Kris & Scott Neely create images of grief & birth. Featured works on wood & paper include Scott Neely's tears and gratia plena and Kris Neely's Guardians and Synapse Series.
Scott Neely works in a range of media, including writing, painting, and printmaking. He has led literary and visual collaborative projects on issues of diversity, race, and religious pluralism, most recently as the Writer-in-Residence for Spartanburg Regional Foundation's Healing Arts program in 2006-07. He serves as Director of Mission at First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, SC.
In Life Breaks Open, Scott presents small drawings, prints, and paintings on themes of pain and birth. Works find their balance through a back-and-forth between expression and restraint, built by layers, then reduced. The pictures aim to be visual poems: succinct, present, ambiguous.
